I am fallingLike a stoneLike a stormBeing born againInto the sweet morning fogD'you know what?I love you better now' 。。。more

For many a year I have wanted to read this, and yes, yes yes yes。I'm not entirely sure whether it actually includes EVERY single song with lyrics that she's written (obviously excluding Pi) because I thought it would be nitpicky to go through every album and b-side just to make sure。 I'd rather experience this in the book form that Kate has presented。Kate's career so far of lyrics are overtly sensual, strongly sexual, extremely genius and whimsically humourous。 The beauty of Kate and her work is For many a year I have wanted to read this, and yes, yes yes yes。I'm not entirely sure whether it actually includes EVERY single song with lyrics that she's written (obviously excluding Pi) because I thought it would be nitpicky to go through every album and b-side just to make sure。 I'd rather experience this in the book form that Kate has presented。Kate's career so far of lyrics are overtly sensual, strongly sexual, extremely genius and whimsically humourous。 The beauty of Kate and her work is, simply, unbelievable。 And I love even further that David Mitchell totally understood the intent and thinking, the feeling behind her words。 At times with his indepth interpretations。And of course, page 100 is a beautiful experience unto itself。I also loved that the songs weren't in a chronological album and tracklist order。 They were organised either by the song cycle (the concept of song cycles fascinates me hugely and Kate masters it) they were in, or by underlying meaning (sometimes loosely on that part)。 So you literally jump decades from page to page; meaning that the songs that I weren't as familiar with, I could hear them all in her voice despite knowing the tune, but had to wonder what "era" of her voice they were written from。I'm not 100% sold on the title, Kate has many other lyrics that could be used for both the title and with links throughout the book, but that is to say that I am actually 98% sold on it。It is strange and kind of disorienting and intoxicating at times to know that these are songs and yet to read them in verse format, despite some lyrics clearly existing as sort of half-improvisations with the use of musical voice and add-ins that usual poetry or slam poetry doesn't have。 It deepens the outline around the lines that are repeated, the ones Kate has chosen to force us to savour that bit more。Good luck to anyone who finds the new invisible ink signed editions!!! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I’ve been a Kate Bush fan since I was 10 years old, and I discovered her 1978 song Wuthering Heights。 After that, I listened to a tape that my Dad had of her music and was fascinated by her voice and creativity。 She always thought outside the box and was never afraid to be whacky and wonderful which is why I admire her so much。 In 2013, Liam Tamne covered ‘This Woman’s Work’ on The Voice and it blew me away。 Her music means a lot to me, and I keep meaning to listen to it more often。 I wish more I’ve been a Kate Bush fan since I was 10 years old, and I discovered her 1978 song Wuthering Heights。 After that, I listened to a tape that my Dad had of her music and was fascinated by her voice and creativity。 She always thought outside the box and was never afraid to be whacky and wonderful which is why I admire her so much。 In 2013, Liam Tamne covered ‘This Woman’s Work’ on The Voice and it blew me away。 Her music means a lot to me, and I keep meaning to listen to it more often。 I wish more than anything that I could see her perform live, because she truly is original and unique。 。。。more

Weird genius from an English witch garden。 Would have loved some analysis of the lyrics or anecdotes about the writing process, but could see how that could spoil the mystery also。 Big up to Wilhelm Reich

I have loved Kate Bush since that first Top of the Pops appearance in 1978, bought all her vynal albums, then the same CDs, then downloaded the mp3s。 I even still have two VHS videos with nothing to play them on。 I felt this book was just what I was looking for, but it just wasn't my cup of tea。 Imagine loving Van Gogh paintings sending off for the paint and getting just that, little paint pots, albeit in a lovely container and even an 18-page instruction booklet。 I hadn't imagined that the enti I have loved Kate Bush since that first Top of the Pops appearance in 1978, bought all her vynal albums, then the same CDs, then downloaded the mp3s。 I even still have two VHS videos with nothing to play them on。 I felt this book was just what I was looking for, but it just wasn't my cup of tea。 Imagine loving Van Gogh paintings sending off for the paint and getting just that, little paint pots, albeit in a lovely container and even an 18-page instruction booklet。 I hadn't imagined that the entire package of music, lyrics, choreography, voice, presentation could not be deconstructed to component isolated parts。 Others may get more from this than I, but the poetry of Neil Peart of Rush or the Beatles lyrics were more my poetical cups of tea than Kate's。 。。。more

I don't even know where I'm supposed to start when I discuss why I love Kate Bush, maybe it's because she has the most captivating voice I've ever heard, the general mystery surrounding her, or that I consider her to be one of the greatest geniuses this world has ever seen。 I believe it's all of these things and then some。 When I first heard Wuthering Heights during the pandemic, I was blown away to say the least。 I knew immediately I had to listen to more of her music, and found myself enjoying I don't even know where I'm supposed to start when I discuss why I love Kate Bush, maybe it's because she has the most captivating voice I've ever heard, the general mystery surrounding her, or that I consider her to be one of the greatest geniuses this world has ever seen。 I believe it's all of these things and then some。 When I first heard Wuthering Heights during the pandemic, I was blown away to say the least。 I knew immediately I had to listen to more of her music, and found myself enjoying a few of her most popular songs like Running Up That Hill and Cloudbusting。 As of now I have listened to almost her entire discography and am still in awe of her strength as a vocalist and writer。 Her greatest feat is undoubtedly The Ninth Wave, and I cannot grasp how Kate managed to create a whole side of an album about a woman drowning alone at sea and make it (in my opinion) the most triumphant feat accomplished by any artist ever。 The Ninth Wave is truly a masterclass in world building and simultaneously one of the most enthralling suites of music ever produced。 She is the blueprint for virtually all artists that have followed after her。 I hope that other people who have not yet taken the plunge into her discography will do so。。。 after all, I need more people to pester。P。S - I gave this book three stars solely because it's just a collection of lyrics。 I adore all of the songs, but it's a pretty simple book。 。。。more

Probably worth owning for Kate Bush fans due to David Mitchell's introduction, which is quite long and provides an interesting examination of her fan appeal and cultural impact。 As a book of poetry, it's kind of strange to read Bush's lyrics without any music backing them。 At times, the songs lose some of their power as a result (I think The Sky of Honey in particular lacks something without the nature noises and other production work on Aerial), but at other points it illuminates the subtlety a Probably worth owning for Kate Bush fans due to David Mitchell's introduction, which is quite long and provides an interesting examination of her fan appeal and cultural impact。 As a book of poetry, it's kind of strange to read Bush's lyrics without any music backing them。 At times, the songs lose some of their power as a result (I think The Sky of Honey in particular lacks something without the nature noises and other production work on Aerial), but at other points it illuminates the subtlety and complexity of her narrative song writing。 For example, I never realized, even after listening to Hounds of Love and the Ninth Wave dozens of times at this point, that on "Watching You Without Me" the garbled lyrics were actually saying something。 Little discoveries like that made it worth a read and made me want to go back through her catalogue and listen while reading through her lyrics。 Definitely a book for the diehard Kate fans, but a worthwhile one in that regard。 。。。more

Despite the total misunderstanding of key songs by the guy who wrote the introduction the book was solid! Obviously Bush's lyrics will always benefit from her delivery but even stripped down they showcased her wit, elegance, and humor just fine。 Despite the total misunderstanding of key songs by the guy who wrote the introduction the book was solid! I read the lyrics while I played each song。 I am a massive fan so I already knew all the words。 Regardless of this it was fantastic to read them through as I listened。 I was fascinated to work out why certain tracks were grouped together。In hardback it is a lovely book just to have and to hold。 My little review is pathetic compared to David Mitchell's analysis which forms the introduction。 However, every individual has their own particular experience which is special to them。 For me, this is a s I read the lyrics while I played each song。 I am a massive fan so I already knew all the words。 Regardless of this it was fantastic to read them through as I listened。 I was fascinated to work out why certain tracks were grouped together。In hardback it is a lovely book just to have and to hold。 My little review is pathetic compared to David Mitchell's analysis which forms the introduction。 However, every individual has their own particular experience which is special to them。 For me, this is a summary of everything that is good about words and the expression of emotion and atmosphere。 She is my inspiration! 。。。more

“Stepping out of the page into the sensual world”。 It feels incredibly ironic, collecting Kate’s lyrics into How To Be Invisible, tracing them and marking them out, transferring audible into visual。 Kate steps out of the page by entering the page, lacing it and lashing it up, slicing her heart。 She writes in red ink, and in turn, splatters her bleeding heart into your own。 I am baffled that in the intro of this book, Mitchell says Kate Bush masks her true self, failing to reveal much of herself “Stepping out of the page into the sensual world”。 It feels incredibly ironic, collecting Kate’s lyrics into How To Be Invisible, tracing them and marking them out, transferring audible into visual。 Kate steps out of the page by entering the page, lacing it and lashing it up, slicing her heart。 She writes in red ink, and in turn, splatters her bleeding heart into your own。 I am baffled that in the intro of this book, Mitchell says Kate Bush masks her true self, failing to reveal much of herself in her lyrics。 Her lyrics are breathing her breath, they are her masks to reveal, try on and toss。 Reading this book is a glimpse into her dressing room, all the measures of light bouncing off the crevices of her face, illuminating and shadowing her masks。 To say that life is anything but breathing, breathing through those masks, and in the process of taking it off to switch, revealing a little of your beating, batted heart。 And your heart screaming, which hill do I run? And what is this god damn deal with god? Breath through body, the lyrics hold much of the truth of French feminist Helene Cixous; liberation through sex, through overflowing, through writing and the rejection of the act, of the beating heart of a tree。 “A book of lyrics is a strange beast。 Readers who know the songs become ‘hearers’ as the brain belts out a speeded up version of the familiar recording, while those readers unfamiliar with the lyrics are confronted by text presented in a poetry format, by which is avowedly not poetry” - David Mitchell。 I did both; fell inlove and tripped into loving songs I had never fallen inlove with through the glimpse of an uncanny collection of words。 Bush navigates the complex world with loose threads, trailing off into a million different directions, eventually coming together to form a full circle。 “Kate’s the opposite of a confessional singer-songwriter in the mould of Joni Mitchell during her Blue period。 You don’t learn much about Kate from her songs。 She’s fond of masks and costumes- lyrically and literally- and of yarns, tabulations and atypical narrative viewpoints” “You’re like my yo-yoThat glowed in the dark”“I’m cloudbusting, Daddy” “You and me knew life itself is breathingBreathingBreathing my mother in” “There’s a city, draped in netFisherman betAnd in the half-light, in the half-lightIt looks like every tower Is covered in websMoving and glistening and rocking It’s babies in rhythm As the spider of time is climbingOver the ruins” (stripped back, bare, more like poetry)。 See how the child reaches out instinctively To feel how fire will feelAnd her line that will always kill me: Tell me we both matter don’t we? I adore Kate Bush and I have devoured all her albums since really getting into her music during my early 20s。 I can't even see the title of 'Top of the City' without having the gorgeous title refrain playing on replay in my head, nor can I think of 'The Dreaming' without the manic chants of 'Sat In Your Lap' or 'Get Out Of My House' going into overdrive in my subconscious。 When I received this gorgeous book as a gift, I was in love。 It is a treasure for collectors and is something I am proud to I adore Kate Bush and I have devoured all her albums since really getting into her music during my early 20s。 I can't even see the title of 'Top of the City' without having the gorgeous title refrain playing on replay in my head, nor can I think of 'The Dreaming' without the manic chants of 'Sat In Your Lap' or 'Get Out Of My House' going into overdrive in my subconscious。 When I received this gorgeous book as a gift, I was in love。 It is a treasure for collectors and is something I am proud to hold on my shelves。 I opened the book to a genuinely impassioned introduction by David Mitchell that made me want to revisit Kate's catalogue from start to finish all over again, something I did soon after。 So far, so good。When I said I devoured Kate's music in the first paragraph, I truly meant it。 I didn't just stream Kate's biggest hits on Spotify, I purchased all her physical releases and pored over the lyric booklets, analysed the images, read the history and release stories。 For me, therein lay the problem - I had these lyrics, albeit in slightly shoddier CD booklets but I'd engaged with these lyrics and I'd read into them。 And these same lyrics comprise the vast majority of this release。I do think this book has purpose though - perhaps just not an enormous amount for me。 In a world of streaming and digital consumption, my experience may not be the experience of many others。 It also opens Kate up to a world of literary interest - casual folk may know her for 'Wuthering Heights' and 'Babooshka', perhaps some of 'Hounds of Love' and not much else。 They will be yet to uncover the haunting stories tucked away deep in her catalogue ('Snowed in at Wheeler Street', 'Pull out the Pin'), the rare glimpses into Kate's own life ('Bertie', 'Snowflake') and, at the very least, get plenty more synonyms for snow than a regular thesaurus could offer。I took a bit of a keen interest in the compilation of the lyric collection - the order of inclusion, the 'sections', the songs that were omitted。 For those interested, the early albums ('The Kick Inside', 'Lionheart' and 'Never For Ever') each offer 3 contributions, whilst the following albums see their entirety included (with the exception of 'Constellation of the Heart' and 'Pi') as well as a handful of non-album tracks。 Though that tally was me vaguely making note whilst reading, maybe missed a few。。。I also enjoyed finding links between songs that were brought together in the book - for example, the way reading 'Lily' with its mystical leanings before 'Among Angels' gave the latter an other-worldly atmosphere that I didn't quite get when I first grappled with it。 There is also some mastery in following the beautifully mundane 'A Sky of Honey' suite with a section heavily inclusive of the wonderful madness that characterises songs from 'The Dreaming'。So I settled at a 3 star review which at once feels harsh (what a beautiful book full of gorgeous lyrics from songs and an artist I adore) but also generous (for the few bits of 'new' content I got)。 All wrapped nicely in a 'but that's just me'。 。。。more
